Cooking in the Kitchen

Today's session in the kitchen gave most students in Room 20 the opportunity to try a vegetable that was new to them - Kohlrabi.  Most of the parents and grandparents who came along to help had never tried it before either. As usual everyone was expected to have a taste.  So kohlrabi, become part of a winter salad with beetroot, carrot and apple.  The herb muffins with loads of cheese, were by far the most favourite dish this session. Followed by the warm potato salad.

Sampling the Soil

As part of our Garden to Table lesson today, Howard brought in 3 different types of dirt from his garden for us to look at closely.  The first soil sample was a very fine, silty clay type soil.  The second was straight from his compost heap and was filled with lots of organic material and was crawling with life - worms, slaters, earwigs.  The last sample for us to investigate was soil straight from his vegetable garden.  Everyone was amazed at how many creatures were living in the compost heap, helping to break the organic material down.

Movie Making

Room 20 students are super excited!

Our movie "The Famous Five" is finished and ready for the big screen.
The students will be all starring in our 3 minute doco film featuring five famous Kiwis.  We are looking forward to sharing our movie with family and friends in Week 10 of the term.  Everyone is buzzing with the notion of seeing themselves on the silver screen.  It's been lots of hard work and reruns but we are delighted with the finished product.  Here are a few "stills" that make up some of scenes in the movie.
